This wren house is designed with the smaller birds in mind.  Although it is called a wren house, it is suitable for many of the smaller birds that are cavity nesting birds.  This nest box would be suitable for a variety of cavity nestiing birds that are capable of entering the 1 1/8 inch entrance such as the chickadee, nuthatch and other small varities.  All of my bird houses are handmade by me and special attention given to quality and price.  This wren house is constructed from 3/4 inch seasoned yellow pine lumber which is a hard durable lumber and will last for many years without anything being done to it but it is recommended that the exterior be given a coat of sealer or paint for protection from the elements.  The dimensions are   5 1/2" x 7" x 11".  It is designed for mounting on a post or building and has predrilled holes at the top and bottom.  This wren house has been used and tested many years with excellent success.  These houses are attractive and can be painted and decorated as you wish, but should not be painted on the inside.  The main purpose of this wren house is for the birds.  The front hinges open from the bottom and is held in place by one screw.  This allows for easy inspection and cleaning after the nesting season is over.

You will not find a better constructed Wren House with the features that this house offers.

Features include

  1. Construction
    1. Constructed from seasoned 1” yellow pine lumber.
  2. Specifications
    1. The overall specifications are 5 1/2" wide, 7 1/2" Deep, 11” High.  Hole entrance is 1 1/8”  Diameter unless otherwise specified.  Nest area is 4 Ύ” x 4”.
  3. Assembly
    1. My houses are assembled with rust resistant decking screws for strength and durability.
    2. Although it is easier and much faster to assemble a house with Brads, staples and nails but they have a tendency to loosen after a year or two and cause the house to separate at the joints.  Always buy houses that are assembled with screws.
  4. Slanted roof.
    1. It is important for the roof to be slanted so that the water will drain off freely, and the oversize roof minimized any water penetration at the top and sides.
  5. Ventilation
    1. Ventilation is provided to help control over heating of the nesting area. The buildup of heat in the house is a main problem for the bluebird and every effort should be made to help reduce this by ventilation, color, and placement of the house
    2. There is a ventilation gap of approx ½” above the front panel and on each side of the house at the peak of the roof to help cool the house in hot weather.
  6. Drainage in case of water penetration.
    1. The floor has drainage holes on each corner.  These holes are created by mitering and beveling the corners at 30 deg.
    2. The beveled holes on the corners not only help in drainage if water, but assists in ventilation and the beveled holes are recommended to help with blowfly infestation which will destroy the nest.
  7. Cleaning and observation
    1. The front panel swings up by removing the screw on the bottom the front panel.  This allows for easy cleaning and viewing of the nest area to observe the young.
  8. Appearance
    1. The top, front and predator guard have rounded edges.  Although this doesn’t mean much to the birds, it does make the house little more attractive in appearance.
  9. Mounting
    1. These houses have predrilled mounting holes for mounting to a wooden post, building, tree etc.
    2. Mounting brackets for mounting to a farm T post are available for $2.50 ea.  You can also mount to a 1” round pipe and clamps, which are availale at most hardware or plumbing stores.
